Anaimalai Wildlife Sanctuary
Anaimalai is one of the first sanctuaries I visited as a child. I keep visiting the sanctuary
because I de-stress when I am there. From Evergreen Shola forest to Temperate
Grasslands this place is absolutely magical with its flora and fauna.

Trail overview
I used to travel here over the weekend. One day of activity and the next day to rest. Totally
depended on local transport, this was my first ever solo visit to the region. Bus journeys either
from Chennai or Bangalore to Coimbatore then to Pollachi and later to the Sanctuary.
Anaimalai Wildlife Sanctuary is home to the Evergreen forest to Temperate Grasslands
making it a vast bio-diversity hot spot. The Forest department organises treks, the guides
are local tribes living in the region. I used to land up and book myself a trek somewhere between
3 to 4 hours and come back for lunch. Take a break and lay still by the canteen area just to
listen to the Jungle. I wait for the later bus which takes you the neighbouring Parambikulam
Sanctuary and back ( more Jungle air time ).
The Highlight for me will be the conversation with the guide as he is a great storyteller about
the Forests and its myth and folklore. Motorcycles are not allowed in the Sanctuary
Places to see en route
An Overnight bus journey to Coimbatore or Pollachi ( plan in such a way that you reach
really early in the morning around 5:00. Head towards Pollachi bus stand and ask for a TopSlip Bus. Enjoy the Village roads till you hit the foothills for the sanctuary. You will slowly witness the change in vegetation as you climb up towards the sanctuary. Please note that Motorcycles are not allowed in the sanctuary and you might have to find
parking in Pollachi. Go for your trek or Jungle safari, visit the Elephant camp and see if you can get a sneak
peak at Parambikulam Sanctuary.
Plan to get to the first bus to Anaimalai from Pollachi by 7:15. Call the Forest Department inPollachi for more information
